Worms for your living soil bed
Living soil begins with active soil life. Our compost worms, bred in-house in Bavaria, can support your living soil bed in breaking down organic material and promoting the natural nutrient cycle.
Wurmiwelt is a family business, born from an idea of our four children. We breed our worms ourselves with great care and are happy to assist you in choosing the right ones for your bed.
Why worms in a living soil bed?
Living soil is more than just a soil mix: microorganisms, fungi, and small soil animals together form a living ecosystem.
Compost worms decompose dead organic material, producing worm castings in the process. They can complement soil life, especially in permanently used beds with an organic mulch layer.
Important: Worms support a functioning system. They do not replace suitable substrate, balanced nutrient supply, or proper watering.
Which worms are suitable for your bed?
At Wurmiwelt, we offer Eisenia andrei from our own breeding. These compost worms are suitable for the decomposition of organic material and can be introduced into a sufficiently moist, well-aerated living soil bed.
Eisenia hortensis, also known as Dendrobaena, are also suitable for appropriate systems. We are happy to discuss which selection fits your project.
Compost worms live primarily in organic-rich areas near the surface. A suitable mulch layer provides them with food and protection.
When should you introduce the worms?
Only introduce the worms once your substrate is prepared and offers stable conditions:
- consistently moist, without waterlogging;
- loose and sufficiently aerated;
- with suitable organic material as food;
- without strong heating from fresh decomposition processes.
Carefully place the worms with their supplied substrate under the mulch layer. Afterward, avoid deep digging and give them time to settle in.
How many worms do you need?
More worms do not automatically mean a better result. The appropriate starting quantity depends on the bed size, the substrate volume, the mulch layer, and the available organic material.
For a new bed, a moderate starting population is often more sensible than a large quantity in an as-yet unstable system.
Send us the dimensions of your bed, the approximate substrate volume, and a brief description of your mix. We are happy to help you with your selection.
